Later this month I'm going to spoil myself with a 1.5Terrabyte hdd.
Now in the mean time my ideas concerning my server setup has crystalised and now I am looking for some advice on the best implementation.
The server has to cater for 4 types of network connections:
Connection to my ptawug router (wired lan) via eth0 for arguments sake.
Connection to the internet (via a usbmodem vodacam 3g), might change to something else, lets call this internet.
Wifi connection, so that mobile devices can access the internet, wifi0
Additional wired lan connection to another pc and later a switch or hub to share the files on the server including (portage and distfiles I am using gentoo) with the rest of my local wired lan, eth1
The internet connection shall have bandwidth accounting.
Routing:
wifi0 must access internet
eth2 must access internet
eth0 shall not access internet
eth2 should be able to access eth0 (irc at least)
Server ip, dns, dhcp address options:
eth0 has a static ip to connect to ptawug with.
The other ip's I would like to have on a separate ip range.
I am use to using dhcp with dnsmasq and ip masquerading to do internet connection sharing with. Not all isp's like multiple ip's using the same connection. I am not sure about vodacom 3g.
I want to share my ftp with the wug and on my local lan.
Any ideas comments or recommendations?

As the nike adds would say: JUST DO IT!

All in all, not too difficult. Use vsftpd for your FTP, iptables for your firewalling and iproute2 for your routing and you'll be just fine. Will work like a charm.

The accounting isn't that simple, but not insanely hard either.

jkroon, such a nice home setup you have got.

Have you tried running Ubuntu verion 11 Enterprise, it is such a nice distribution.

I also like Red Hat 5.4 Enterprise. The only thing I dont like about red hat is the subscription, you have to pay to get the updates. which is not great.

Thanks

Hehe, many people say many things about many distributions. Personally I don't see what the distribution has to do with what bmeagle was (seeing that he's no longer in SA) trying to achieve. And no, I'm not an Ubuntu nor RedHat fan. If I were to use a binary distro, it would def be Debian. The other choices makes even less sense for me.
